“WORLD’S THIRD LARGEST ECONOMY NEEDS CLEANER AIR”

“WORLD’S THIRD LARGEST ECONOMY NEEDS CLEANER AIR”

Introduction
India being the world’s third largest economy has been among the fastest growing economies in the last two decades. The development is at crossroads. For a developing economy like India, the developmental path has always been erratic. One of the greatest challenges has been to reduce air pollution that has also led to sufficient legal interventions in mandating strong clean air measures. The concept of human rights came into picture right after independence but the concept of clean environment has never been a priority. However, if we talk about today’s evolving human arena, this concept is emerging as a hot debatable topic.

According to Article 21 of the constitution, “Environment and life are interrelated and the existence of life on earth depends on the harmonious relationship between ecosystem and environment.”

Text Box: Fig.1: Showing too many people, too little resourcesWhile the resources are getting depleted, the number of people using these resources is increasing rapidly. But the number getting increased is not the real problem. The problem is how these resources are getting distributed and used.

Air pollution and the economy
The health, environmental, and economic impacts of air pollution are significant. Each day, air pollution causes thousands of illnesses like cardio vascular diseases and metastasis sickness leading to lost days at work. Air pollutants that are inhaled have serious impact on human health affecting the lungs and the respiratory system. They are also taken up by the blood and pumped all round the body. Far beyond the runny nose or persistent cough, breathing in the toxins, ozone, and particulates of polluted air can damage your body's immune system. This leaves the door open for rashes and skin infections, eye diseases, illnesses (such as asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia), brain and nerve damage, as well as several different types of cancers.

Need of the hour:
With the growth of civilized society, men have become more and more materialistic and have lost the sight to protect his environment. It is quite clear that the air we breathe in affects our health directly.
Economic development without environmental considerations can cause serious environmental damage affecting the quality of life of the population, both present and future. The reason that India is struggling with air pollution is because the sources are numerous and closely linked to economic activity. To become sustainable, we need to meet the daily needs of the people without compromising with the needs of the future generations. Although a lot of acts and regulations have been passed out in this regard but nothing fruitful has come up. A cleaner air to breathe in is the foremost necessity and requirement for the health and safety of mankind. The challenge here lies in utilizing resources in an optimum way so that cleaner air could be affordable to everyone at low cost since a lot couldn’t be spent on medical treatments.

Bottom line:

There is a growing need to develop air purification systems which need to make sure that the economic value could be considered while having a cleaner environment. With a vision to grow a business whilst reducing the environmental impact of the operations and increasing positive social impact, Magneto Environmental Grouppe has been working since 1980.
